Daniel Michalski has reached his first semi-final on the ATP Challenger Tour. The World No. 337 from Poland defeated Czech teenager Dalibor Svrcina 6-3, 6-1 in Friday’s quarterfinal match at the Falkensteiner Punta Skala – Zadar Open.
Michalski, who battled through the qualifying of the €45,730 clay-court event, capitalized on five of his eight break-point opportunities to succeed in one hour and 25 minutes. The 22-year-old Warsaw native, a winner of seven ITF World Tennis Tour titles and currently ranked on a career-high, will next take on Spanish qualifier Carlos Sanchez Jover. The lefty from Albacete edged out home favourite Duje Ajdukovic 7-6(3), 6-3 in one hour and 35 minutes. The World No. 517 has also made it to the final four at a Challenger tournament for the first time.
Cobolli, Guinard last seeds standing
In the bottom half of the draw, World No. 165 Flavio Cobolli remains the highest-ranked player left in the singles draw. The No. 6 seed from Italy beat Eduardo Esteve Lobato of Spain 6-1, 7-5. Cobolli won 57 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 32 minutes. The 19-year-old Florence native will next face in-form Frenchman Manuel Guinard. The eighth favourite, who captured his maiden Challenger crown in Roseto degli Abruzzi in Italy last Sunday, beat Italian Alessandro Vavassori 6-4, 6-4. The encounter lasted one hour and 43 minutes.
Guinard will also play Saturday’s doubles final when he is teaming up with Franco Agamenone of Italy against Vavassori and Zdenek Kolar of the Czech Republic. Singles action is scheduled to start at 11 am local time at the Tenis Klub Borik.
