Following the tournament in Biel/Bienne, the second leg of a two-week indoor swing in Switzerland is taking place in the canton of Ticino with the second edition of the Challenger Banca stato Città di Lugano. The €45,730 ATP Challenger Tour event is being held on the hard courts of the Padiglione Conza in Lugano and is run by Riccardo Margaroli, father of Swiss tennis professional Luca Margaroli.

Cressy, Albot knocked out
Main draw action started with a bang, as both top two seeds fell in the opening round on Monday. Local wild card entry Leandro Riedi has celebrated the best win of his young career by knocking out World No. 72 Maxime Cressy 7-6(2), 6-7(3), 6-4. The 20-year-old, ranked 518 places below the big-serving US-American, withstood 15 aces and broke his rival in the fifth game of the third set with a fantastic backhand passing shot to eventually prevail after two hours and 26 minutes.
Riedi is in excellent form these weeks. The Frauenfeld native captured his second title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in Trimbach 10 days ago and reached the quarterfinals of the Flowbank Challenger Biel/Bienne last week. Up next for Riedi in Lugano will be either French qualifier Dan Added or Daniel Masur from Germany.
In the bottom half of the draw, Pavel Kotov upset World No. 117 and second favourite Radu Albot of Moldova 6-2, 6-3. The 23-year-old Russian saved all eight break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own five break-point chances to advance after one hour and 19 minutes. Kotev will next take on the winner of the encounter between Alexandre Muller of France and Swiss qualifier Jerome Kym.
