Swiss young gun Leandro Riedi has booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the an ATP Challenger Tour tournament for the second consecutive time. The 20-year-old wild card entry defeated French qualifier Dan Added in the second round of the Challenger Banca stato Città di Lugano 6-4, 6-2 at the Padiglione Conza on Thursday afternoon.
Riedi, who advanced to the stage of the final eight on home soil in Biel/Bienne last week, struck eight aces, saved all seven break-point chances he faced and capitalized on all of his three own break-point chances to succeed after one hour and 12 minutes. The World No. 590, a winner of two ITF World Tennis Tour events, will next challenge his compatriot Marc-Andrea Huesler.
World No. 134 Pierre-Hugues Herbert, the highest-ranked player left in the singles draw of the €45,730 ATP Challenger indoor hard-court tournament, defeated Tim van Rijthoven from the Netherlands 6-3, 7-5. The fourth-seeded Frenchman won 58 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 11 minutes. Up next for Herbert will be Romanian veteran Marius Copil.
Rodionov remains solid in Switzerland
In the bottom half of the draw, in-form Austrian Jurij Rodionov extended his winning streak to seven matches. The champion of last week’s Flowbank Challenger Biel/Bienne eased past Yuichi Sugita of Japan 6-3, 6-0. Rodionov converted five of his seven break-point opportunities to prevail after only 56 minutes.
The 22-year-old Nuremberg native will next play Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany, who exited Mirza Basic from Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 55 minutes.
