Seven days of clay court tennis action is taking place in Mexico this week with the $50,000 San Luis Open Challenger.

The first round concluded on Tuesday with top-seed Michael Berrer losing to Federico Gaio 3-6, 7-6, 5-7. The 24-year-old Italian won 84% of his first service points and converted six of his 10 break point chances to advance after two hours and 25 minutes. Gaio will take on Nikola Milojevic next, who defeated Spaniard Oriol Roca Batalla 6-4, 6-3.

The tournament’s number two Albert Montanes had to fight hard when he battled past Pedro Cachin 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. The world number 129 from Spain produced 13 double faults, but capitalized on five of his six break point opportunities to seal victory in two hours and 21 minutes. Montanes will face Laslo Djere in the second round, who overcame Argentine qualifier Agustin Velotti 7-5, 3-6, 6-0.

Third seed Andre Ghem prevailed with a 7-5, 7-6 win against Dennis Novak to play Mexican wild card Lucas Gomez next. The 20-year-old from Tijuana cruised past Kazakh teenager Dmitry Popko, winning 6-2, 6-0 in 68 minutes. Fourth favourite Adrian Menéndez-Maceiras fell in the opening round, as he lost 1-6, 6-1, 5-7 to Brazilian qualifier Caio Zampieri.
