Rune Earns Sanremo Challenger Crown

Danish teen sensation Holger Rune is the champion of the 2022 Sanremo Challenger. The tournament has returned to the circuit for the first time since 2010. The top seed of the €45,730 clay-court event battled past Italian qualifier Francesco Passaro 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in Saturday’s singles final.

Rune capitalized on six of his 11 break-point chances and won 52 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 58 minutes.

Rune advanced to the title match with wins over Evgenii Tiurnev of Russia, Nerman Fatic from Bosnia and Herzegovina, local wild card entry Matteo Gigante and Andrea Arnaboldi of Italy.

By lifting his fifth ATP Challenger career trophy, his first of the season, the 18-year-old from Gentofte earned €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.

Only a few hours after his triumph, Rune competed in the qualifying of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, defeating Radu Albot from Moldova in straight sets. He continued his fantastic run of form on Sunday with a 6-3, 7-5 win over US-American Maxime Cressy and booked his spot in the main draw of the ATP Masters 1000 event.

Frenchmen triumph in doubles

On Friday, Geoffrey Blancaneaux and Alexandre Muller captured the doubles title. The Frenchmen defeated the all-Italian combination of Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Gigante 6-4, 3-6, 11-9.. The encounter lasted one hour and 20 minutes.

Blancaneaux and Muller secured their fist team title on the Challenger Tour, split €2,670 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
