Diaz Acosta Triumphs At Coquimbo Challenger

Facundo Diaz Acosta has claimed his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour by lifting the trophy of the Dove Men+Care Legión Sudamericana Coquimbo Challenger, a clay-court event hosted by the Club de Tenis Coquimbo in Chile.

In Saturday’s singles final between two unseeded players, the World No. 316 from Argentina battled past 19-year-old Brazilian wild card entry Pedro Boscardin Dias 7-5, 7-6(4).

Diaz Acosta converted four of his six break-point opportunities and won 52 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 53 minutes.

At the age of 21, the Buenos Aires native has become the fourth Gaucho born in the 2000s to win a Challenger event, joining Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Sebastian Baez and Thiago Tirante. Diaz Acosta, a winner of three tournaments on the ITF Pro Circuit, earned $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.

Duran/Mejia triumph in douubles

In other action, Guillermo Duran of Argentina and Nicolas Mejia from Colombia captured the doubles title. The No. 3 seeds upset the tournament’s top favourites Diego Hidalgo from Ecuador and Cristian Rodriguez of Venezuela 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 in the championship match, which lasted one hour and 24 minutes.

By winning their first team title, Duran and Mejia split $3,100 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
