Jamie Murray will become the first British player ranked world number one. What in Indian Wells didn’t work out, is going to happen after Miami.

When the 30-year-old Scot lost alongside his partner Bruno Soares in the opening round at Crandon Park, it seemed that it wouldn’t be enough again to reach the top of the doubles rankings. Yet, current world number one Marcelo Melo (partnering Ivan Dodig) was knocked out in the second round as well and consequently Murray will overtake the Brazilian when rankings are updated on 4 April.

Murray celebrated his career milestone posting a picture on his Instagram account of himself sitting on a beach with the No 1 written in the sand after hearing the news.

“Last night I went to bed wondering if that was the closest I would ever get,” he wrote. “Today driving in my car my phone started to go crazy.”

Meanwhile, proud mother Judy Murray referenced sons Jamie and Andy’s world rankings in doubles and singles:
