Passaro Advances To Forli Open Semis

Three Italians and one Spaniard have earned a place in the semi-finals of the Forli Open. Lorenzo Musetti, top seed ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court tournament in northern in Italy, benefited from the retirement of seventh-seeded Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

In the final match on Friday evening, Musetti lost the opening set in the tie-break 6-7(9) but was dominating the second set, winning it 6-1, when the South American was forced to stop playing due to hip problems. The World No. 66 from Italy, who is seeking his second ATP Challenger title in Forli, will next play his compatriot and qualifier Matteo Gigante. The 20-year-old lefty from Rome upset No. 3 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry from Argentina 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 28 minutes.

In the bottom half of the draw, Francesco Passaro has reached the stage of the final four at Challenger level for the second time after finishing runner-up to Holger Rune in Sanremo in early April. The 21-year-old qualifier from Perugia beat fellow Italian Riccardo Bonadio 6-4, 6-1. Passaro won 85 per cent of his first-service points and and 58 per cent of the total points played to succeed after one hour and 25 minutes.

The World No. 369 will next challenge No. 2 seed Jaume Munar, who eased past fifth favourite Taro Daniel of Japan 6-2, 6-2. The encounter lasted 80 minutes.
