Passaro To Challenge Musetti For Forli Open Title

Francesco Passaro

FORLI/STARNBERG, June 4, 2022

Lorenzo Musetti and Francesco Passaro will compete in Sunday’s all-Italian singles final of the €134,920 Forli Open. Musetti, top seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court event, ended the run of his compatriot and qualifier Matteo Gigante in the stage of the last four on Saturday.

The World No. 66 came back from a set down, winning 55 per cent of the total points played to seal a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory in two hours and three minutes.

Passaro, who also battled through the qualifying, upset second-seeded Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-3, 7-5. The 21-year-old from Perugia converted four of his eight break-point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 45 minutes.

Twenty-year-old Musetti is bidding for his second ATP Challenger career crown following his maiden triumph here in Forli two years ago. Passaro will appear in his second title match after finishing runner-up to Holger Rune in Sanremo in early April. The two #NextGenATP Italians will meet for the first time.

Barrientos/Reyes-Varela continue good run of form

Earlier in the day, Nicolas Barrientos from Colombia and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela of Mexico captured the doubles title. The top seeds fought past the tournament’s No. 3 seeds Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul of France 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 in one hour and 48 minutes.

Barrientos and Reyes-Varela won their fifth team title of the season. The pair split €7,870 in prize money and earned 125 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
