“It was good because I was a break down right after the beginning. I just kept going, didn’t give up or was impressed, as he started really well today. I did good in these tough conditions with a lot of wind. I also served well in the important moments,” said Marterer, a winner of seven Challenger crowns. The World No. 208 will next take on home favourite Andrea Arnaboldi, who benefited from the retirement of fellow Italian Filippo Baldi. Arnaboldi was leading 7-5, 3-1 when Baldi was forced to stop playing due to an elbow injury.
In the bottom half of the draw, second-seeded Spaniard Jaume Munar defeated local wild card entry Matteo Arnaldi 6-2, 7-5 to reach the second round. The World No. 92 capitalized on four of his six break-point chances and won 61 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 26 minutes. Up next for Munar will be last week’s Forli Open finalist Francesco Passaro of Italy, who battled past his compatriot Giovanni Oradini 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and 23 minutes.
