SAVANNAH, March 31, 2016
The USTA announced that 2011 Savannah Challenger finalist Donald Young of Chicago will headline the competitors for the 2016 St. Joseph’s/Candler Savannah Challenger a $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challenger event hosted at The Landings Club, April 18-24.
The tournament is the fourth USTA Pro Circuit men’s Challenger event of the 2016 season. It is the second of three consecutive Challenger tournaments held on clay courts to help develop players on the surface leading up to the 2016 French Open. There are six USTA Pro Circuit men’s events (Futures and Challengers combined) scheduled to take place in the USTA Southern Section in 2016.
Currently No. 80, Young is the highest-ranked of the 22 men who received direct acceptance into the 32-player main draw. Thirty-two players will compete in the qualifying tournament April 16-18, for four other berths. The local tournament organizers and the USTA will also award wild card entries to complete the field.
In 2011 and 2015, Young reached the fourth round of the US Open. He also reached the finals of the PTT Thailand Open in 2011 and Delray Beach Open in 2015. Young holds 12 USTA Pro Circuit singles and doubles titles overall (eight in singles, four in doubles).
Young is one of eight US-Americans in the main draw, alongside former world junior No. 2 Frances Tiafoe; 2013 champion Ryan Harrison; former UCLA standout Dennis Novikov; and former Wimbledon boys’ singles champion and former Wake Forest University standout Noah Rubin.
