Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and Matteo Berrettini of Italy will play for the singles title of the BOSS Open in Stuttgart. The 35-year-old Britain edged past Australia’s Nick Kyrgios 7-6(5), 6-2 in the semi-finals.
On a sunny Saturday at the Tennis Club Weissenhof, Murray continued his stunning run in Germany by demonstrating his prowess on grass. The World No. 68, who claimed his first victory over a top-five player for more than five years against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals, saved both break points he faced and capitalized on two of his own three break-point chances to advance after one hour and 33 minutes.

“It has been a long time since the last final [on grass]. A lot of ups and downs, but I kept going and kept working and finally managed to get to another one,” Murray said in his on-court interview. “I am proud of the effort I have put in.
“I was just a little more solid in the tie-break. I asked the questions. On these courts, when it is playing quick, the set often comes down to one or two points and I was a little more secure at the end of the first set.”
Berrettini beats Otte
Earlier in the day, Berrettini edged past Germany’s Oscar Otte 7-6(7), 7-6(5) to reach his first tour-level final of the season. The No. 2 seed missed the clay season after being sidelined with a right hand injury in March but feels physically fine again. Berrettini fired 18 aces and won eight points more than his opponent to prevail after one hour and 46 minutes.

“I am really happy. Arriving at the tournament, that was the goal [to reach the final],” Berrettini said. “From thinking about it and actually making it is a big difference. I am happy I am here and have another chance to play another final after months without playing and after the first big surgery in my career.
“This means this is my level and I have proved once again I am comfortable at this level and on this surface. I really like it here at Stuttgart.”
Murray will appear in his second final of 2022 after finishing runner-up to Aslan Karatsev at the Sydney Tennis Classic in January. The former World No. 1 is bidding for his 47th singles career title. Berrettini could lift his seventh trophy. The pair’s head-to-head record is tied at 1-1.
