HALLE, WESTPHALIA/STARNBERG, June 13, 2022

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev will make his second appearance at the Terra Wortmann Open as he looks to continue his progress following his injury layout during the clay swing. The 26-year-old Russian, who clinched his first title on grass at the Mallorca Championships last season, competed at the Libema Open in’s-Hertogenbosch last week and finished runner-up to local wild card entry Tim van Rijthoven.

Medvedev, top seed of the ATP 500 grass-court event in Halle/Westphalia, will face David Goffin of Belgium in his opening match.

“My goal is to play for the title. That’s normal when you start as the top seed,” said Medvedev, who was welcomed in Halle on Monday afternoon by tournament director Ralf Weber with a cake, which was decorated with the number ONE. “I now feel much more comfortable on grass than I have in recent years. But my favorite surface is still the hard court.”

“We are happy to have the number one in the world with us. He is definitely one of the clear favorites for the title,” said Weber.

If you have the most points in the ranking over the last 52 weeks, then you deserve to be up there. This is fair. The numbers don’t lie,” said Medvedev, who has soared back to No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, regaining the position he held for three weeks in March this year.
