Two Frenchmen booked their spots in the quarterfinals of the Ilkley Trophy €134,920 ATP Challenger Tour grass-court event. Constant Lestienne edged out No. 6 seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old Amiens native struck seven aces and won 75 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 18 minutes. Lestienne will next take on his compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The World No. 170 from France defeated Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 7-6(2). Herbert converted two of his nine break-point opportunities to advance in one hour and 47 minutes.
In other action, Jiri Vesely fought past Frenchman Hugo Grenier 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3. The No. 2 seed from the Czech Republic fired 26 aces and won 56 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in two hours and six minutes. Up next for Vesely will be fifth favourite Jack Sock. The 29-year-old US-American beat German qualifier Daniel Masur 6-2, 7-6(4). The encounter lasted one hour and 14 minutes.
