MALAGA/STARNBERG, June 28, 2022
In his last season as a tennis professional, former doubles World No. 5 David Marrero and his partner Dhiruva Mulye from the United States lost in Tuesday’s first round of the inaugural Malaga Open 6-2, 6-2 against Luca Margaroli of Switzerland and Japanese Yasutaka Uchiyama. The ATP Challenger Tour hard-court tournament is being held this week at the Inacua Racquet Centre, one of the largest tennis sports complexes on the Costa del Sol.
Marrero captured 14 doubles titles on the ATP Tour including the triumph at the 2013 ATP World Tour Finals in London together with fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco. The 42-year-old Las Palmas native reached the quarterfinals in doubles at three of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
Marrero announced his retirement at the 2022 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell but continued to play on the ATP Challenger Circuit as well as on the ITF World Tennis Tour. Last year, the Canarian served as tournament director at his home tennis events in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
