Facundo Mena is the champion of the Cali Open hosted by the Club Campestre de Cali in southwest Colombia. The No. 2 seed of the $53,120 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event defeated eighth-seeded Serbian Miljan Zekic 6-2, 7-6(3) in Saturday’s singles final.
Mena sent down seven aces and won 88 per cent of his first service points. The 29-year-old Argentine broke his rival two times to secure victory in one hour and 40 minutes.
By winning his third Challenger career crown, his first of the season, Mena earned $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.
“A great week, I am happy to enjoy the trophy with my performance,” said Mena. “The 80 points help me to face the season with what is to come and with a lot of confidence. In the first set I was able to serve well, then I recovered and Colombia suits me well, I have many friends.”
Jaziri/Menendez Maceiras triumph in doubles
In other action, Malek Jaziri of Tunisia and Spaniard Adrian Menendez Maceiras captured their first doubles title as a team. The unseeded duo beat US-American alternates Keegan Smith and Evan Zhu 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 16 minutes.
Jaziri and Menendez Meceiras split $3,100 in prize money and collected 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
