Luciano Darderi emerged victorious from the all-Italian second-round match with qualifier Giovanni Fonio at the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Todi 6-3, 7-6(3) to book his place in the quarterfinals of the €45,730 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event.
The World No. 117, a two-time champion on the ITF World Tennis Tour, capitalized on five of his 11 break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 46 minutes.
“Fonio is a dangerous opponent on these courts and it was a difficult match,” Darderi said. “I had a good start, but he found pace in the second set, in which only a few points made the difference.”
Next up for the 20-year-old, who was born in Villa Gesell, Argentina, will be his compatriot Francesco Passaro, who edged out fourth favourite Nino Serdarusic of Croatia 6-4, 7-6(1) in one hour and 58 minutes.
