Thiago Monteiro is the champion of the second edition of the €134,920 Salzburg Open. The No. 6 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court tournament defeated Norbert Gombos from Slovakia 6-3, 7-6(2) in Sunday’s singles final.
In front of packed stands at the Salzburg Tennis Club, Monteiro dominated the match with his serve, struck eight aces and won 71 per cent of first-service points. The 28-year-old Brazilian capitalized on one of his five break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 51 minutes.
Monteiro claimed his seventh ATP Challenger Tour career crown, his first of the season. The World No. 89 earned €18,290 in prize money as well as 125 ATP Ranking points.
