BASTAD, July 11, 2022
Elias Ymer delighted his home crowd by reaching the second round of the Nordea Open in Bastad. The 26-year-old Swede, who entered the ATP 250 clay-court tournament with a wild card, defeated German youngster Daniel Altmaier 6-4, 7-6(5) in his first-round match on Monday.
In the pair’s first tour-level meeting, Ymer withstood six aces, saved all eight break points he faced and converted one of his own six break-point opportunities to prevail after two hours and one minute.
“Today was crazy, full stadium crowd,” Ymer said. “When I played today I had a different feeling, maybe a bit maturing now compared to the first time I played here. It is just an honour to play at home and I love it.”
The World No. 134 has won his opening match three times in eight appearances at home in Bastad, one of the country’s most typical summer resorts. Now, Ymer is looking to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in his next match against third seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.
Carreno Busta knocks out Wawrinka
In other main draw action, Pablo Carreno Busta edged past Swiss wild card entry Stan Wawrinka 7-5, 6-4. The fifth seed from Spain won 53 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 24 minutes.

“It was a very tough match for me in the first round,” said Carreno Busta in his on-court interview. “Against Stan it is always very difficult to start the tournament, so I’m happy because I thought my level was good. I played very solid from the baseline. It was a bit difficult with the wind, but I thought my serve was very good throughout the match. It was very important to my game.”
The World No. 18 will next take on the winner of the encounter between his compatriot Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Argentine qualifier Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
