ROME, GEORGIA/STARNBERG, July 14, 2022

The ATP Challenger Tour is back in the United States with the inaugural Georgia’s Rome Challenger hosted by the Rome Tennis Center. This is the third professional tournament taking place in 2022 at the Berry College.

Tatjana Maria captured the $60,000 women’s title in early February, and the ITF Georgia Open, a professional wheelchair tournament with $32,000 in prize money, was held in early March.

Two seeded players at this week’s $53,120 hard-court event have booked their spots in the quarterfinals. Bjorn Fratangelo outlasted Hady Habib of Libanon 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 on Wednesday. The seventh-seeded US-American withstood nine aces and broke his opponent’s serve three times to secure victory in one hour and 46 minutes. Fratangelo will next take on the winner of the encounter between No. 4 seed Juan Pablo Ficovich of Argentina and Ecuadorian Roberto Quiroz.

The 28-year-old from Pittsburgh will be joined by his compatriot JJ Wolf in the stage of the final eight. The No. 2 seed defeated Shintaro Mochizuki of Japan 6-3, 7-6(1). Wolf fired 10 aces and won 76 per cent of his first-service points to advance in one hour and 49 minutes. Up next for the World No. 111 will be Yibing Wu of China, who eased past Ulises Blanch from the United States 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 28 minutes.

In other action, Yasutaka Uchiyama reached the quarterfinals. The 29-year-old Japanese beat Yu Hsiou Hsu of Chinese Taipei 7-6(4), 6-2 in one hour and 32 minutes and will next play either top seed Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan or Canada’s Alexis Galarneau.
