Humbert, Lestienne Advance To Second Round In Pozoblanco

After top seed Nuno Borges fell in his opening match on Monday, two Frenchmen lead the field into the second round of the Open Ciudad de Pozoblanco. No. 2 seed Constant Lestienne began his title bid at the €45,730 ATP Challenger hard-court event in Andalucia, Spain with a solid 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hiroki Moriya of Japan.

Lestienne, ranked 119, fired 14 aces and won 85 per cent of his first-service points to advance in one hour and 21 minutes. The Amiens native will next take on Thiago Seyboth Wild from Brazil, who beat Spanish qualifier Adrian Menendez Maceiras 6-1, 6-2 in 62 minutes.

Earlier on Tuesday, third-seeded Ugo Humbert eased past US-American qualifier Dali Blanch 6-2, 6-1. The World No. 157 from Metz saved both break points he faced and capitalized on four of his own seven break-point chances. Humbert will next play Briton Paul Jubb.

In other action, Vasek Pospisil booked his spot in the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nicolas Alvarez Varona of Spain. The fifth favourite from Canada struck 10 aces and won 57 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 25 minutes. Up next for Pospisil will be Emilio Nava from the United States, who battled past Frenchman Antoine Hoang 7-6(3), 6-7(6), 6-3 in the longest match of the day. The encounter lasted three hours and eight minutes.
