CORDENONS/STARNBERG, August 6, 2022
Andrea Vavassori and Zhizhen Zhang will compete in Sunday’s championship match of the €45,730 Serena Wines Tennis Cup 1881 Internazionali Del Friuli Venezia Giulia in Cordenons.
Italian alternate Vavassori stopped the run of US-American qualifier Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, winning 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4 in the semi-finals on Saturday. The World No. 210 sent down five aces and won 72 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 41 minutes.
Later in the day, Zhang fought past No. 7 seed Alexandre Muller of France 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The 25-year-old Chinese capitalized on five of his 13 break-point chances to secure victory in two hours and 17 minutes.
Zhang is seeking his third ATP Challenger Tour career title, his first since 2019. Vavassori could lift his very first singles trophy on the Pro Circuit. The 27-year-old from Torino won the only previous meeting with Zhang in the first round of the Zadar Open in Croatia in March this year.
Vavassori/Brown triumph in doubles
Vavassori was also successful in doubles. Alongside Dustin Brown from Jamaica, the No. 3 seeds captured the title with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Serbia’s top seeds Ivan and Matej Sabanov.
By winning their third ATP Challenger team title, Vavassori and Brown split €2,670 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
