GRANBY/STARNBERG, August 25, 2022
Following a day of postponements due to the rain, Wednesday was jampacked at the Championnats Banque Nationale de Granby ATP Challenger hard-court event when the first round of the main draw concluded.
Canadian wild card entry Gabriel Diallo opened the day with a dominant 7-5, 6-1 win in one hour and 50 minutes over compatriot Dan Martin. Other morning and afternoon results include victories for home favourite Justin Boulais, Jordan Thompson of Australia, Aziz Dougaz from Tunisia, Hady Habib of Libanon, Germany’s Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, Japanese Hiroki Moriya as well as US-Americans Strong Kirchheimer, Omni Kumar, Colin Markes and qualifier Aidan Mayo.
Mayo, the 19-year-old Sacramento, California native, won his first main-draw match at an ATP Challenger, beating the tournament’s No. 2 seed Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic. The World No. 842 fired 11 aces and won 62 per cent of his first-service points to secure a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory in two hours and 28 minutes.
The upset of the day now means that Thompson, the No. 3 seed, is the highest-ranked player left in the singles draw after top-seeded Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech withdrew from the event on Tuesday. Mayo will next take on Briton Henry Patten.
