ANTWERP, September 8, 2022 (Press Release)
The European Open will welcome two Grand Slam champions for the seventh edition of the ATP 250 tournament in Antwerp: Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem.
“After previously announcing a top-eight player in the world with Felix Auger-Aliassime, we are delighted to be able to add two Grand Slam winners to that list,” said tournament director Dick Norman.
“Together, they won no less than four Grand Slam titles!” World No. 295 Stan Wawrinka, who finished runner-up to Andy Murray in Antwerp 2019, will be back at the Lotto Arena once again.
“One of the most memorable matches in European Open history was Wawrinka’s super tense 2019 final against Andy Murray,” Norman pointed out. “After an injury, Stan Wawrinka is making his way back. Wawrinka is one of the few tennis players of his generation who could compete against ‘The Big Three’: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.”
The next Grand Slam winner playing at the European Open is World No. 211 Dominic Thiem. “After two finals at Roland Garros (2018 and 2019), the final at the Australian Open (2020) and becoming the champion at the US Open in September 2020, Dominic Thiem has joined the ranks of top absolute tennis players,” Norman explained.
“Fans are used to Thiem dominating opponents with his physical baseline game, which features relentless attacking. Thiem is coming back to his best shape in 2022. He recently made it to the semifinals in Gstaad and regularly shows off his flashes of brilliance. Don’t forget that the former world number three is still only 28 years old and has already won 17 ATP singles titles,” Norman added.
