Luciano Darderi caused the upset of the day at the $53,120 Challenger de Buenos Aires by knocking out the tournament’s top seed Federico Coria of Argentina 6-2, 7-6(4) in the first round on Tuesday. The World No. 109 converted three of his six break-point opportunities to secure victory in one hour and 35 minutes.

Darderi, who was born in Argentina but represents Italy, will next take on the winner of the encounter between Sumit Nagal of India and Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild. Their match was suspended later in the evening due to darkness.

In other action, Renzo Olivo emerged victorious from the all-Argentine battle with last week’s Challenger Villa Maria champion Nicolas Kicker. The 30-year-old from Rosario won 52 per cent of the total points played to prevail 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 43 minutes. Olivo will next play local wild card entry Roman Andres Burruchaga.
