Local wild card entry Roman Andres Burruchaga celebrated the biggest win of his career by knocking out World No. 96 and second seed Daniel Altmaier from Germany 7-6(6), 7-5 in Thursday’s second round of the $53,120 Challenger de Buenos Aires.

The World No. 349, son of former football international Jorge Burruchuga, who scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute of the 1986 World Cup final against Germany and attended the match on Pista Central at the Racket Club, saved one set point in the tie-break of the first set and came back from a break down in the second to secure victory in two hours and 25 minutes.

“The match went just as we had previously planned. I really like the conditions on the court and I think I had a very high level that allowed me to win,” said Burruchaga.

The 20-year-old Buenos Aires native will take on Dmitry Popko in the quarterfinals of the clay-court event. The 235th-ranked Kazakh defeated Brazilian qualifier Wilson Leite 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 22 minutes.

In the top half of the draw, Mariano Navone rallied past Spanish lucky loser Carlos Sanchez Jover 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The 21-year-old Argentine, who finished runner-up to Nicolas Kicker at last week’s Challenger Villa Maria, broke his rival’s serve sevent times to prevail after one hour and 56 minutes.

Up next for Navone will be Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild, a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Italy’s Luciano Darderi. The encounter lasted one hour and 33 minutes.
