PARMA/STARNBERG, October 4, 2022
Following the Emilia-Romagna Tennis Cup, held in Montechiarugolo in June, the ATP Challenger Tour has returned to the Province of Parma for a second time this season. The third edition of the Parma Challenger presented by Iren, organized by MEF Tennis Events, is being held at the Tennis Club Parma.
Roberto Carballes Baena, top seed of the €134,920 clay-court event, opened his title bid with a hard-fought 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2 first-round win over local wild card entry Gianmarco Ferrari on Tuesday. The World No. 77 from Spain sent down seven aces and won 68 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in two hours and 28 minutes.
Carballes Baena will next take on Miljan Zekic of Serbia, who edged past #NextGenATP Italian Giulio Zeppieri 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 37 minutes.
In the bottom half of the draw, second-seeded Serbian Dusan Lajovic defeated French teenager Luca van Assche, who appeared in his maiden Challenger final at last week’s Lisboa Belem Open and finished runner-up to Marco Cecchinato, 6-2, 7-6(4). The 32-year-old Belgrade native converted three of his five break-point chances to advance in one hour and 40 minutes.
Up next for Lajovic will be Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo of Spain.
