Following five triumphs on the ITF Pro Circuit, Jelle Sels from the Netherlands has clinched his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour by winning the 9th edition of the €67,960 Open de Vendée in Mouilleron-le-Captif, France.

In front of 3,000 spectators inside the Vendespace Arena, the World No. 173 defeated Canadian wild card entry Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 6-3 in Sunday’s singles final. Sels capitalized on four of his seven break-point opportunities to succeed in one hour and 22 minutes.

“I want to thank you for your energy. I couldn’t be happier. This is my first Challenger title after two finals. I was focused, I fought for every point, it was the only way to win,” Sels told the crowd during the on-court ceremony.

The 27-year-old Woerden native earned €9,200 in prize money as well as 90 ATP Ranking points.

“Of course, I’m a bit disappointed, but I want to thank the organization of the tournament for this opportunity. I had a very nice week, it was fantastic. I love playing in France,” said Pospisil.

Arends/Pel prevail in doubles

On Saturday, Sander Arends and David Pel captured the doubles title. The Dutchmen rallied past Purav Raja and Divij Sharan of India 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 10-6 in one hour and 58 minutes.

By winning their eighth Challenger team title, Arends and Pel split €3,950 in prize money and collected 90 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
