ISMANING/STARNBERG, October 11, 2022

Jonas Forejtek of the Czech Republic won the battle of the young guns against German wild card entry Marko Topo 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in Tuesday’s first-round match at the Wolffkran Open by Tannenhof. The €45,730 indoor tournament, the only ATP Challenger Tour event held on carpet, is taking place this week at the Tennis Club Ismaning, located about seven kilometers northeast of Munich on the right high bank of the Isar River.

In the pair’s first meeting, Forejtek, 21, withstood seven aces from his 19-year-old rival and broke serve four times to secure victory in one hour and 40 minutes. The World No. 238, a three-time junior Grand Slam titlist, one in singles and two in doubles, will next take on either Canadian veteran and No. 3 seed Vasek Pospisil or German teenager Phillip Florig.

Halys opens title bid with win in straight sets

Later in the evening, World No. 78 and top seed Quentin Halys began his chase for a sixth Challenger career title with a 7-6(8), 6-4 win over Michael Geerts from Belgium. The 25-year-old Frenchman fired 18 aces and won 93 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 16 minutes.

Up next for Halys will be Ramkumar Ramanathan of India, who battled past British qualifier Billy Harris 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 7-6(5) in two hours and 21 minutes.
