TORONTO, October 31, 2022 (Tennis Canada Press Release)
The singles draw at the Tevlin Challenger has reached its conclusion and a new champion has been crowned at the $60,000 ITF World Tennis Tour event which wrapped up on Sunday at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.
The championship match pitted top-seeded Su Jeong Jang of the Korea Republic, ranked No. 127 in the world, against fourth-seeded American Robin Anderson who sits at No. 180 on the WTA rankings. In the end, it was Anderson who came away an impressive 6-2, 6-4 upset victory thanks to a total of eight aces in the contest, compared to zero for her opponent, and six break point conversions with the 12 opportunities she earned. She did not drop a set all week en route to the title.
“I’m so happy,” Anderson said following the final. “I’m also really tired. I had to run a lot this week but it’s really great. I always enjoy coming here. I grew up in New Jersey, so I love indoor tennis. So, for me to come here, I really like it. I’m just really excited.”
She added: “For me, I kind of put a lot of pressure on myself to do well this fall. I haven’t been doing so great these last months so to get these wins in a row and a bunch of matches this week was my goal. To win was the icing on the cake so I’m really happy.”
The win gives the 29-year-old her second piece of Tevlin Challenger hardware. She also took home the doubles trophy the last time the tournament was played in 2019 alongside Jessika Ponchet of France. The triumph is also Anderson’s second ITF singles title of the season in her second final. In May, she captured top honors on home soil at the $60,000 ITF women’s event in Orlando, Florida after beating her compatriot Sachia Vickery in the final.
As for Jang, she suffered her first loss in three final appearances on the ITF circuit this year. Prior to coming to Toronto, she captured a pair of titles on clay, first at the $60,000 ITF event in Canberra, Australia in April and then at the WTA $125,000 Series tournament in Bastad, Sweden this summer. The 27-year-old has also contested the qualifying at all four Grand Slams in 2022 and earned a main draw berth at the Australian Open where she fell to Danka Kovinic in the opening round.
The ITF World Tennis Tour will be returning to Canada beginning November 5 for the Calgary National Bank Challenger which will be hosting a combined men’s and women’s event for the first time in tournament history.
Prior to Sunday’s singles final, the second edition of The Girls. Set. Match. Tie-break Tournament presented by National Bank was held on the bubble courts at Sobeys Stadium which was won by Tiffany Ting who beat Taylor Nicole Marsella 7-5 in the final. The event aims to provide girls with a unique opportunity to compete in a fun, short-format tournament that removes the pressure of regular competition. Click here to view all the final results.
