Riedi Advances To Quarterfinals At HPP Open

Swiss youngster Leandro Riedi continued his fine run of form this week in Helsinki by reaching the quarterfinals of the HPP Open ATP Challenger Tour 80 tournament. The 20-year-old qualifier edged past Maximilian Marterer of Germany 7-6(5), 6-2 on Thursday.

Riedi, who captured two of his three ITF World Tennis Tour singles titles this season, saved all three break points he faced and converted both of his own two break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 23 minutes. Up next for the World No. 277 will be Dimitar Kuzmanov of Bulgaria, who defeated Turkish alternate Altug Celikbilek 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 23 minutes.

Tomas Machac and Jelle Sels are the last two seeded players left in the singles draw of the €67,960 hard-court event. Machac beat local wild card entry Otto Virtanen 6-4, 6-2. The fifth favourite from the Czech Republic won 57 per cent of the total points played to prevail in one hour and eight minutes. Machac will next play Belgian Zizou Bergs.

Meanwhile, Sels rallied past Raul Brancaccio of Italy 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The No. 8 seed from the Netherlands fired 17 aces to succeed in one hour and 50 minutes. Sels will next take on Adrian Andreev of Bulgaria.

In other action, Yannick Hanfmann knocked off Briton Ryan Peniston 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 27 minutes. The 31-year-old German will face qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan in the stage of the last eight.
