Varillas Wins Sao Leo Open

SAO LEOPOLDO/STARNBERG, November 21, 2022

Juan Pablo Varillas was crowned singles champion of the inaugural Challenger Dove Men & Care Sao Leo Open hosted by the São Leopoldo Tênis Clube. The No. 2 seed of the $53,120 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court -tournament in Brazil battled past World No. 103 and top seed Facundo Bagnis of Argentina 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final.

Varillas withstood nine aces, broke his rival three times and won 51 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in three hours and 12 minutes.

“I am very happy, I believe I had an incredible and positive week in every way,” Varillas said.

“I believe I fulfilled what I was looking for in the competition, it’s not always possible, but I did it. I am very happy to play here in São Leopoldo and win another Challenger title. I found the club very beautiful, its structure. It was a great final, a very tough match that was decided in details, but I was calm because of the week I had done.”

The World No. 112 from Peru lifted his fifth ATP Challenger Tour career trophy, his first of the season. Varillas pocketed $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.
