The ITF has announced the 2022 year-end Davis Cup Nations Rankings, which include the results of the 2022 Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals. Croatia, who reached the semi-finals this year, retain the top ranking, while world champions Canada rise to No. 4, their highest position since the rankings were introduced in 2001.
The Canadian team, led by the formidable duo of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, won their first title at the men’s World Cup of Tennis, defeating Australia 2-0 in the final in front of more than 9,000 fans in Malaga on Sunday. The victory comes just three years after Canada reached their first Davis Cup final, with the team having finished as runners-up to Spain in Madrid in 2019.
For Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov, it was the second world title they had helped win for their nation – the pair were both members of the first Canadian team to win the Junior Davis Cup title in Madrid in 2015.
Canada’s new ranking of No. 4 is a rise of two places from No. 6 since September, and a rise of three places from No. 7 since the 2021 year-end rankings.
While Australia’s wait for a first Davis Cup title since 2003 continues, Lleyton Hewitt’s team return to the Top 10 in the latest rankings, having been ranked at No. 11 prior to the Final 8 knockout stage in Malaga. The team rise to No. 8 this week – their highest ranking since 2018, when they were ranked at No. 6.
Croatia rose to No. 1 after their runner-up finish in 2021 and a run to the semi-finals this season has seen them retain top spot. The Croatians previously held the No. 1 ranking between November 2005 and December 2006 and one of just eight nations to have held the No. 1 ranking since the rankings were introduced in 2001 (alongside Argentina, Australia, Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, Russia and Spain).
The Davis Cup Nations Rankings are published following each competition week and reflect the performance of teams over the previous four seasons, with recent results weighted more heavily. The current rankings cover a five-year period due to the 2020 and 2021 seasons being combined as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
