Llamas Ruiz Books Quarterfinal Berth At Maspalomas Challenger

Spanish youngster Pablo Llamas Ruiz has reached his third consecutive quarterfinal on the ATP Challenger Tour by advancing to the stage of the last eight at the inaugural eó Hotels Maspalomas Challenger. The 20-year-old wild card entry of the €45,730 clay-court event hosted by the Conde Jackson Tennis Club in Gran Canaria defeated his compatriot Alejandro Moro Canas 6-4, 7-6(6) on Wednesday.

Llamas Ruiz, who made it into the quarterfinals at the Braga Open in Portugal in September and reached the semis at last week’s Copa Faulcombridge on home soil in Valencia, capitalized on four of his 14 break-point chances to seucre victory in two hours and 24 minutes.

The World No. 417 from Jerez de la Frontera will next take on Lorenzo Giustino of Italy, a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Lukas Neumayer in one hour and 56 minutes.

In other action, Italian qualifier Gian Marco Moroni continued his fine run of form with a 7-6(6), 7-5 victory over Frenchman Titouan Droguet. The 24-year-old Rome native saved the only break point he faced and won 53 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 55 minutes.

Up next for Moroni will be Steven Diez of Canada, who fought past Tunisian qualifier Moez Echargui 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 28 minutes.
