Australian tennis great Lesley Bowrey AM joined Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley and fellow Grand Slam champion Sam Stosur at Melbourne Park today to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first of her two Roland-Garros singles titles in 1963 and 1965.
Between 1961 and 1967 Bowrey (nee Turner) won 13 Grand Slam titles, including two singles crowns at Roland Garros, seven in doubles across all four Grand Slams and four mixed doubles titles. Lesley was a finalist at the Australian Open in 1964 and 1967 and represented Australia at the inaugural Federation Cup in 1963, won two Fed Cup titles in 1964 and 1965 and captained the team between 1994 and 2000.
In 1997 Lesley was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, closely followed by the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame in 1998, and her bronze bust is proudly displayed alongside other Australian champions of the game in Garden Square at Melbourne Park.
Sam Stosur, whose clay-court prowess took her to the Roland Garros final in 2010 and the semis in 2009, 2012 and 2016, previewed the event which begins on Sunday 28 May in Paris. Nine Australian players will compete in the main draw, 11 in qualifying, nine in doubles, five in juniors and one in the quad wheelchair division.
