Kotov will next take on Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, who benefited from the retirement of home favourite Elias Ymer. The 24-year-old Belgrade native was leading 6-0, 3-2 when Ymer was forced to retire due to injury.
In the bottom half of the draw, Gael Monfils emerged victorious from the French derby with No. 2 seed Adrian Mannarino. The 37-year-old won 54 per cent of the total points played to secure a 7-5, 7-6(3) victory in one hour and 45 minutes.
Up next for Monfils will be either Laslo Djere of Serbia or Czech lucky loser Tomas Machac.
