GUAYAQUIL/STARNBERG, November 3, 2023
The recent Pan American Games champion from Chile, Facundo Diaz Acosta of Argentina, claimed the last spot in the quarterfinals of the XIX Challenger Ciudad de Guayaquil Copa Banco Guayaquil by defeating his compatriot Marco Trungelliti 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(5) on Thursday.
Overcoming his opponent’s experience and his own physical and mental fatigue, Diaz Acosta closed a match that became complicated towards the end, as he was leading 5-2 in the third set and eventually won in a tie-break.
“There, I met a lot of people, new friends, new acquaintances, and I also received encouraging messages that give you confidence, make you want to continue on that path, and it’s really nice to receive those messages,” Diaz Acosta expressed about the reactions from his compatriots after winning the Pan American gold medal in Santiago, where he defeated Chilean player Tomas Barrios Vera in the final.
