MASPALOMAS, December 2, 2023
Swiss teenager Kilian Feldbausch continued his fine run of form this week at the EÓ Hotels Maspalomas Challenger by reaching his first final on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 18-year-old, who battled his way through the qualifying of the €73,000 clay-court event, defeated No. 7 seed Daniel Rincon of Spain 6-3, 6-1 in the stage of the last four on Saturday.
Feldbausch saved both break points he faced and converted four of his own 11 break-point chances to advance in one hour and six minutes.
“I have played a good season and want to further improve,” said Feldbausch, who is coached by his mother, former Top 40 player Cathy Caverzasio. This week in Southern Gran Canaria, the World No. 659 from Geneva is joined by his uncle.
Later in the afternoon, top seed Pedro Martinez overcame a slow start, as he outlasted No. 3 seed Filip Misolic of Austria 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The World No. 117 from Spain withstood six aces and broke his rival’s serve five times to prevail after two hours and 30 minutes.
After winning his first title on the Pro Circuit at the ITF World Tennis Tour M15 event in Boca Raton, Florida last month, Feldbausch could lift his maiden Challenger trophy. Martinez is bidding for his fifth Challenger career crown, his second of the season following his triumph at the Open Brest in France in late October. The pair will meet for the first time.
Duncan/Willis earn doubles title
In other action, Scott Duncan and Marcus Willis captured the doubles title. The No. 4 seed from Great Britain beat the tournament’s top favourites Theo Arribage and Sadio Doumbia of France 7-6(5), 6-4 in one hour and 23 minutes.
By winning their maiden Challenger title, Duncan and Willis split €4,250 in prize money and earned 75 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
