GUIA DE ISORA/STARNBERG, January 15, 2024
The ATP Challenger Tour has made a triumphant return to the picturesque Canary Islands, and this week all eyes are on the Tenerife Challenger 1. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, the €120,950 hard-court event being held at the Abama Tennis Academy in Guía de Isora and organized by MEF Tennis Events promises thrilling tennis action and fierce competition.
Monday’s first-round action was headlined by Brandon Nakashima, who battled past local wild card entry Martin Landaluce 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(1). The No. 4 seed from the United States struck nine aces and won 72 per cent of his first-service points to advance in two hours and 20 minutes.

“It was an incredible match,” Nakashima said. “Martin has great talent and many weapons in his arsenal. I’m pleased with the battle we fought, and I wish him the best for the bright future ahead. I wasn’t able to express my best tennis throughout the entire match, but I’m happy to have pulled through. The atmosphere here is incredible, and the organization seems perfect. I hope to play many more matches.”
Up next for the World No. 127 from San Diego, California will be another Spaniard, either wild card entry Pol Martin Tiffon from Barcelona or Madrid native Alejandro Moro Canas.
In other action, Pablo Llamas Ruiz of Spain also booked his spot in the second round in Tenerife. The No. 6 seed defeated Alibek Kachmazov from Russia 7-6(5), 6-4. Llamas Ruiz converted three of his 10 break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 48 minutes.
The 21-year-old from Jerez de la Frontera will next take on the winner of the encounter between Adrian Andreev and French qualifier Valentin Royer.
