Dutra da Silva wins three-hour battle
In other action, No. 4 seed Santiago Rodriguez Taverna of Argentina lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to Brazilian qualifier Daniel Dutra da Silva in three hours and 11 minutes, the longest match of the tournament so far.
“It was a tough match, but it was a beautiful victory. The crowd helped a lot. Playing at home is different, and it’s great to have the fans cheering all the time. At 5-5, I got a bit tired, was feeling some cramps, but with the crowd pushing, I gave that extra push,” Dutra da Silva said.
His next opponent is the Italian Alexander Weis, who rallied past Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 34 minutes.
