KIGALI/STARNBERG, March 2, 2024
Kamil Majchrzak has clinched the title of the inaugural Rwanda Challenger, the first ATP Challenger Tour tournament held in Sub-Saharan Africa since 1990 in Nairobi, Kenya. The 29-year-old Polish, who entered the main draw of the $41,000 clay-court event with a wild card, defeated No. 4 seed Marco Trungelliti of Argentina 6-4, 6-4 in Saturday’s singles final at the Kicukiro Ecology Tennis Club in Kigali.
Kigali, the vibrant capital city of Rwanda, is a bustling metropolis nestled in the heart of East Africa. Situated in the central part of the country, Kigali serves as the political, economic, and cultural hub of Rwanda, offering a glimpse into the nation’s rich history and promising future.
Majchrzak advances to the championship match with wins in the top half of the draw over Russian Bogdan Bobrov, Juan Pablo Paz of Argentina, third-seeded Frenchman Calvin Hemery and No. 7 seed Max Houkes from the Netherlands.
The World No. 652, who had been ranked inside the Top 100 before accepting a 13 months suspension under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme, withstood seven aces and broke Trungelliti’s serve three times to secure victory in one hour and 33 minutes.
