Paraguayan teenager Adolfo Daniel Vallejo has reached his second career semi-final on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 19-year-old defeated home favourite Orlando Luz 6-3, 6-1 Friday’s stage of the last eight at the Circuito Banco BRB/Engie De Tenis Profesional – Sao Leo Open.

Vallejo, who entered the main draw of the $82,000 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil with a wild card, was in total control of the match. He didn’t face a break point and converted four of his own 16 break-point chances to advance in one hour and 34 minutes.

The World No. 472 will next take on either Matheu Pucinelli de Almeida of Brazil or his compatriot and No. 4 seed Felipe Meligeni Alves. Their quarterfinals match was cancelled and postponed to Saturday due to bad weather.

Varillas back into semi-finals

Earlier in the day, top seed and defending Sao Leo Open champion Juan Pablo Varillas booked his spot in the semis following a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over No. 8 seed Goncalo Oliveira from Portugal. The 28-year-old Peruvian withstood 11 aces and broke his rival four times to succeed in two hours and six minutes.

Varillas will next face Frenchman Enzo Couacaud, who battled past third-seeded Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. The encounter lasted one hour and 50 minutes.
