“It’s the first time I’ve faced him. He’s already beaten incredible players, so I knew I had to play really, really good,” Sinner said. “The first couple of matches are never easy [on a new surface]. This grass is a little different to Wimbledon. Fabian is an incredible player. It was a tough match and I’m pleased to be in the quarters.”
Sinner will next take on Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany, who edged out No. 6 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece 6-4, 6-4.
In other second-round action Hubert Hurkacz beat Australian qualifier James Duckworth 7-6(3), 6-4. The 2022 Halle champion saved the only break point he faced and capitalized on one of his own three break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 26 minutes.
Up next for the Polish will be US-American Marcos Giron, who edged past Italian Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 44 minutes.
