HAMBURG, June 25, 2024
The WTA Tour will return to the Rothenbaum Tennis Complex this summer. From August 4 to 10, national and international tennis stars will compete in the Hamburg European Open, a WTA 125 clay-court event held in the Hanseatic city. The organizing team from MatchMaker managed to secure the license for this event on short notice, specifically for this year. Four local heroes have already confirmed their participation in the tournament: World No. 75 Tamara Korpatsch, Germany’s Billie Jean King Cup player Eva Lys, last year’s Hamburg European Open finalist Noma Noha Akugue, and Germany’s top junior, 19-year-old Ella Seidel.
“The venue of the Club an der Alster is my home, and I am already thrilled to play at the Hamburg European Open 2024. I’ll be playing at the Olympics in Paris the week before, and my home tournament will follow right after. I hope many fans will come to support us,” said Korpatsch, who is part of the Bundesliga team of Hamburg’s Club an der Alster, which is based at the Rothenbaum Tennis Complex.
Tournament director Sandra Reichel stated: “I am very happy that we can still hold a WTA tournament in Hamburg this year. Hamburg is Germany’s women’s tennis capital – both our top Hamburg players and the fans deserve a women’s tournament.”
Due to the busy tournament calendar in the year of the Olympics and the separation into separate men’s and women’s tournaments in Hamburg with different organizers, a WTA 250 tournament at the usual venue at the Rothenbaum was not possible this year. The alternative location at the Hamburg City Park also didn’t work out. Therefore, the 250 license for the originally planned tournament week (July 20-26) was temporarily assigned to Iasi, Romania, for 2024.
The WTA 250 event will return to Hamburg in 2025 and is scheduled for July 13 to 20.
