Bernard Tomic has booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Cranbrook Tennis Classic in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The 31-year-old Australian rallied from a set down to outlast US-American qualifier Quinn Vandecasteele 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 in Thursday’s second round.

Tomic, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 17 in January 2016, withstood 17 aces and broke his opponent’s serve three times to prevail after one hour and 50 minutes. In his third ATP Challenger Tour quarterfinal of the season, the current World No. 245 will take on Nishesh Basavareddy from the United States, who was a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 winner of Antoine Bellier from Switzerland in one hour and 42 minutes.

Tomic is seeking his fourth Challenger career crown this week, his first since Mallorca 2018. He could claim his second title of the season following his triumph at the ITF World Tennis Tour M25 event in Chennai, India in January.

In the bottom half of the draw, Gijs Brouwer of the Netherlands fought past US-American Thai-Son Kwiatkowski 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3. The No. 4 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 75 hard-court event capitalized on six of his 14 break-point chances and won 56 per cent of the total points played to succeed in two hours and two minutes.

Up next for Brouwer will be home favourite Ryan Seggerman, who emerged victorious from a duel of the qualifiers, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Mexican Ernesto Escobedo. The encounter lasted 70 minutes.
