Christoper O’Connell has clinched the title of the Guangzhou Huangup International Tennis Open. The top seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 100 hard-court tournament outlasted Sho Shimabukuro of Japan 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) in Sunday’s singles final.
O’Connell battled his way into the championship match with wins in the top half of the draw over Frenchman Tristan Lamasine, Chinese wild card entry Ye Cong Mo, No. 5 seed Radu Albot of Moldova and thrid-seeded Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin.
The 30-year-old Australian fired 12 aces in the final and won 74 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in two hours and 31 minutes.

O’Connell lifted his sixth ATP Challenger Tour career trophy, his second on Chinese soil following his triumph in Shanghai last year. The World No. 87 pocketed $ 18,230 in prize money as well as 100 ATP Ranking points.
The Gunagzhou Huangup International Tennis Open offered a total prize purse of $133,250 and was held at the Guangzhou Development District International Tennis School.
