Jil Teichmann has become the champion of the fourth edition of the WTA Zavarovalnica Sava Ljubljana. In Sunday’s final, played in front of packed stands at the Tivoli Tennis Center, the 27-year-old Swiss defeated Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz.

The final was of high quality, and despite being decided in just two sets, it lasted two hours and 18 minutes. In the 11th game, the Spaniard broke Teichmann’s serve and was serving for the first set. However, the Swiss responded brilliantly, forcing a tiebreak, which she won 10-8.

The second set was also very competitive, filled with long rallies, giving the audience a thrilling tennis experience. Teichmann broke Parrizas Diaz’s serve in the ninth game and then held her serve to win 6-4. After her victory, she lay down on the clay court, clearly emotional after a challenging period that saw her drop from 21st in the WTA rankings to the brink of the top 200.

For the Swiss, who won the Billie Jean King Cup with her national team in 2022, this is her first WTA title since 2019.

“I am overjoyed to have finally achieved this victory after all the struggles. The journey wasn’t easy, and I played many tough matches this week. It feels like this week mirrored what I’ve been going through lately. I kept fighting till the end, and I was rewarded for it. I believe I’m on the right path, and I hope this tournament will be a turning point in my career. This win will give me the drive, motivation, and confidence to return to the rankings I once held,” Teichmann said.
