TENERIFE, January 14, 2025

At the age of 33, Pablo Carreno Busta’s appearance at the Tenerife Challenger is more than just a formality—it’s a key step in his comeback journey. The Gijon native returned to action last May following an elbow surgery, climbing from outside the Top 1,000 to his current position of World No. 182 in just a few months.

With the help of a protected ranking, Carreno Busta remains active in top-tier events, making his stop in the Canary Islands a strategic move to regain form and confidence. The 2019 Davis Cup champion with Spain and Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist has already proven his mettle, with his 2022 ATP Masters 1000 triumph in Montreal standing as the seventh ATP title of his career.

The competition, however, will be fierce at the ATP Challenger Tour events held at the Abama Tennis Academy in Guia d’Isora. Chilean Cristian Garin, a former World No. 17 and five-time ATP champion, enters the tournament fresh off a successful qualification for the Australian Open and aims to improve on his current ranking of World No. 150. Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori, once ranked World No. 37, returns after injury setbacks derailed his 2024 season. Dominik Koepfer, the tournament’s top seed and former Top 50 player, will also be a strong contender as he begins his campaign sitting at World No. 124.

Spain will field a strong contingent, led by Carreno Busta and Javier Barranco Cosano, alongside promising wild cards.

Wild Cards for Top Island Talents

The collaboration between MEF Tennis Events and the Federación Canaria de Tenis has taken its first tangible step with the announcement of wild cards for the two ATP Challenger 75 tournaments. In the first event, invitations have been extended to Noah López Cherubino and Saúl Pacheco Benasayag, while the second tournament will feature David Aguiar Johansson and Miguel García González, along with Samuel García Hernández, who will receive a wild card from the organizers.

“We are pleased and grateful for the collaboration established with MEF Tennis Events,” said José Sepúlveda, President of the Federación Canaria de Tenis. “I’m looking forward to the start of the two tournaments to see the best players from the Canary Islands competing against Challenger Tour professionals.”
