STARNBERG, February 3, 2025
A bumper weekend of Davis Cup action drew to a close on Sunday with victories in the Qualifiers First Round for Spain, France, Belgium and Hungary.
Hungary clinched a sensational 3-2 win over 2022 world champions Canada in Montreal, thanks to a decisive Marton Fucsovics singles victory over Alexis Galarneau. They will host Austria in the Qualifiers Second Round (12-14 September).

“It’s part of Davis Cup – you’re going to go up and you’re going to go down,” said Canada’s team captain Frank Dancevic after the final rubber. “Its not every year you’re going to win. Davis Cup is something that takes a lot of emotions from you, and it’s a great learning experience for the team. Losing is part of it and it’s part of the journey. We keep our heads up, we move forward, and we’re excited to see who we will be playing in September and hopefully come back to the Qualifiers.”
Spain sealed a comfortable 3-1 win over Switzerland in Biel to set up a home tie against Denmark in September. Elsewhere, France cruised to a 4-0 triumph over Brazil in Orleans and will play an away tie against Croatia in the Qualifiers 2nd Round.
In Hasselt, Belgium beat Chile 3-1 in a tie that ended in dramatic fashion, when Zizou Bergs was awarded victory in his singles match against Cristian Garin, after Garin did not resume play following an accidental collision at the change of ends.
After the independent doctor ruled Garin was fit to continue, Garin refused to resume play which saw Chile receive three consecutive code violations, the last of which was a game penalty that awarded Bergs the deciding set, 7-5.
