Croatian Davis Cup representative Matej Dodig started his campaign at the first of three ITF World Tennis Tour M15 tournaments of the 53rd edition of the Istarska Rivijea with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over 27-year-old Spaniard Sergi Perez Contri (ATP 719.). The tournament is being held at the Pical Tennis Center in Porec, where Dodig is the top seed.
Thus, the 19-year-old Osijek native, currently ranked World No. 292, continued his streak of excellent performances at the Istarska Rivijera, where he has already won two titles in Rovinj (2023 and 2024), both without losing a set.
His opponent in the match for a place in the quarterfinals will be 23-year-old Italian Samuele Pieri (ATP 727.).
On Thursday, another Croatian representative, 20-year-old Split native Mili Poljičak (ATP 293.), will play his quarterfinal qualification match. He will attempt to secure his first victory against Ukrainian Vyacheslav Bielinskyi (ATP 555.) in their third head-to-head encounter.
Poljičak warmed up for this match on Wednesday by playing the first round of the doubles tournament with Emanuel Ivanišević. The Croatian duo defeated Germans Christian Djonov and Felix Einig 6-3, 6-1.
The only remaining first-round match, between last year’s champion Sandro Kopp and Italian qualifier Andrea Meduri, was interrupted due to rain when the Austrian led 4-6, 6-2, 5-3, and will be resumed on Thursday.
